New York. May 2.1. — The contract for second call
on the services of joeke.v Walter Miller was a good
investment for .Tanu-s It. Keene. Miller won two
raci-s I (slay in tlie Keene (adors. and the victory of
/amlK‘si in the handicap may lie credited directl.v
to .\lill(‘r's part in the race, for Montgomer.v was
miicli the best. As well ridde-n as Zambesi was.

pulling lip when g«dng to the first turn, wliere' a
little energy would have enabled him to hold iliis

Montgomery lost several lengths because of this
and when entering the Imekstreteh was a long
wa.v lieldnd Zambesi, which Miller sent awa.v front
the liarrier in bis usual hurry-up style, a proceed-
ing wldeh eonfrlbuted largely to his success. Mont-

hackstretch only to get into a |)ocket on the turn,
wliere he had to be taken to the outside again, los-

PASSING OF A POPULAR SPRINTER,

The death t>f Tocolaw at Oakland last Saturday
evening marked the passing of one of the most
IMipuIai- Iioi-.ses tliat ever ract-d in California. T(h-o-
law was a six-.vear-old eliestnut horse b.v I’.assetlaw
-I.a Toqneia. He was tired at Rancho del I’aso
and was taken to New York in the summer of 11K)2
and Sold at auction to L. Aste for f2..">00. Bnt
lie did not race in tlie colors of the liootblack king
of Hie iiielfopolis. W. K. .lenuings took liim over
from Aste ami he again crossed the continent to
make Ids first start at Oakland .Tanuary 14, 19o;5. In
this race lie finished tliird, but teu days later he
made his second start over a heavy track and won,
ruiiiiiiig the haif-niile in 491.

He did not win again until he Iieeanie tlie prop-
erly of Jasper Madison, the <-oIored ex-jockey
in 19o."i. Tliat first victor.v. however, was an
index to his fancy as to track. Though he won two
races over a fast track, he liked the going soft
and slow. His game was sprinting. The distam-es
from five-eigtiis to seven-eigliths suited him to a
nicely. He never won a raee at a mile. No one
knew hi.s capabilities lietter than his colored owner,
and through Hie tIUrtwn victories Tivcolaw seor<-d
for liim, principally in handicaiis, MadLson was ele-
vated to a state of aflliteuce, for he took down

many a liig wager over his triiimph.s. 'I'ocolaw, Iiow-

ever, did not die the property of the former
jockey. Ia*ss tlian a fortnight ago he sold him to
Charles Williams. While cantering at Oakland
after the races last Saturday aflermvon one of the
bandages on Hie front legs of tlie horse- liecaiiie un-
fastened. He stepped on tlie trailing cloth, tripped,
foil and liroke a leg. Ills destruction was neces-
sary. Here is a record of Toeoiaw's performances
and winnings:
